Chief Black Promoted to Assistant Chief of Training

Graham Fire & Rescue has promoted Chief Matt Black to Assistant Chief of Training.
Black started as a volunteer firefighter in Steilacoom in 1998. He went on to complete the Emergency Medical Technician program at Bates Technical College before being accepted as a volunteer firefighter at Graham Fire & Rescue in 2000. Since then, Black has ascended through the ranks serving the positions of Firefighter, Firefighter/Paramedic, Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief.
Black is involved in several advisory groups in Pierce County, including the Pierce County Skills Center advisory board, and multiple promotional boards throughout the State. In addition, he has committed to continuing his education and is working to complete his Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration.
“I pride myself with approaching each situation with the mindset of “relationship v. issue” stated Black. “I believe any problem can be solved if you put the relationship before the issue.”
The Assistant Chief of Training is one of the District’s key divisional leaders, and oversees training of all fire district personnel.
